MATYAS SHOOTS 856 SERIES Mike Matyas shot games of 267, 290, 299 for an 856 series on Thursday, November 16, in the Classic League at Echo Lanes. Mike had the first nine strikes in the first game but left a solid 10 pin in the 10th frame and missed it. In the second game he started out with a solid 10 pin but converted the spare and continued on to roll 11 strikes in a row. The third game he started with 11 in a row and left a solid 10 once again in the 12th frame. In review that is 31 strikes out of a possible 36, with 22 in a row starting with the second frame of the second game. This is a new house record, beating his previous record of 842, shot in February 2002. Mike started bowling in the 5th grade at the age of 11. He spent 6 years in the youth program developing his skills. There was no doubt, from those who coached Mike, that he had the skills and ability to become an exceptional bowler and he has not let them down. Once graduating from high school he moved up to the adult leagues. As a youth and as a young adult Mike worked hard at his game practicing several times a week honing in those skills and seeking advice. In his first year of adult league (1997-98 season) he bowled in 2 leagues with a high average of 194. Since this time he has steadily improved. During his short career (9 years) Mike has shot 4 - 800 series, 70 - 700 series, 8 - 300 games (the first one being bowled in the Echo 65'rs league in September 1999, and 5 - 299 games. He has been a member of the All City Team 7 years (top 5 averages) with the highest average the last 3 years, 225, 228, 227 respectively. Over the past 3 years Mike has cut his bowling back to one night a week but hasn't lost the touch, as you can tell from above, actually he has improved. Mike is a very likeable young man with a great attitude. He is a pleasure to bowl against even when he is kicking your butt. He is a great example for both young and old. Could a 900 series be in store? Stay tuned. Submitted by Mower County Nesletter |
