As a 16-year old high-school kid from Rochester, MN., Dick Sternberg surprised many of the citys veteran bowlers by winning high average in two of the citys top leagues. He attended the University of Minnesota and as a freshman rolled a 300 game in the U of M Classic League. He qualified for a spot on the U of M bowling team and won the Big Ten Tournament All Events title in 1961.

Sternberg went on to bowl in many of the top leagues in the Twin Cities, including the Minneapolis Traveling League. He bowled with the prestigious Hamms Beer team, winning the league championship three consecutive years from 1963-65. His Thunderbird Motel team won the Traveling League title in 1967. He also bowled in several of St. Pauls top leagues including Hafners Major, where he had high average for the 1979-80 season with 219 a personal best. He is a four-time member of the St. Paul All- City Bowling Team.

Dick made numerous appearances on WCCO's "All Star Bowling TV show, including a 5-week winning streak and victories over such well-known pros as Bill Lillard, Pete Tountas, Pat Patterson (twice), Ray Bluth and Buzz Fazio. He also defeated Don Carter in the final round of the 1965 ABC Masters.

Sternberg has many city, state and local tournament wins to his credit including:

1980 Minnesota Master's Tournament

Because of the travel schedule for his work as an outdoor writer, Sternberg retired from serious bowling after the 1980 season. He still does some recreational bowling and finds the conditions much easier these days than they were back in the 60s and 70s. At age 70, he rolled a 290 and a 300 game while vacationing in Florida.

As a member of the Minnesota State Bowling Hall of Fame, Sternberg has one unique credential: He is also a member of the Minnesota Fishing Hall of Fame.
