Gordy started his bowling career in 1946 at Ben's Lanes in Red Wing. He then moved to Minneapolis in 1960 and competed in the St. Paul Masters, Minneapolis Masters, and Metro Traveling Leagues.

He was a member of the Hamm's Beer team that won three ABC titles. In 1965 they won the Classic Team All Events title in the St. Paul Armory. In 1970 and 1972 they captured the ABC Team titles. His other tournament accomplishments were capturing the 1961 & 1962 Minneapolis ABC City Team and the 1962 & 1963 Minneapolis All Events titles. He also won the 1961 & 1979 Garden Center All Events, the 1958 Richfield Singles Classic, the 1959 Red Wing All Events, and the BPAA West Suburb titles.

He was inducted into the 1979 Minneapolis Hall of Fame in the Superior Performance category.

His honor scores totals were 1 - 300 and 1 - 299 game along with a high series of 793. His highest average was 221 in 1963.
