Dick was the secretary of the association for 17 years and during that time he was also the manager for the local bowling tournament. He was instrumental in making changes and upgrading the tournament as he guided the members through the years. The local association awards banquet and meeting became an end of the season highlight. The fall jamboree started each bowling season with a tournament, distribution of secretary supplies and a workshop for all new league officers.
Dick’s management skills allowed time for the board members to join Public Access TV. Some board members took a class on cameras and editing equipment, which were supplied by public access TV, and volunteered their time to film and edit. They filmed the Annual Duluth vs. Superior bowling match, local monthly men’s tournament finals, local junior boys vs. girls youth tournament and multiple CBA’s. Local TV stations took note of the venture and had a 2+ hour men, women and youth tournament on ABC affiliate WDIO TV. The show lasted 8 years broadcasting to Northern Minnesota & Wisconsin.
When the local association added awards for the local bowlers in all average categories (in addition to the ABC awards system), there was more work for Dick, but he never complained.
ABC took note and the Duluth area Bowling Association was awarded: American Bowling Congress 1 Year Service Award 1988-89, Public Relations Award 1st Place 1990-91, Public Relations Award 2nd Place 1991-92, American Bowling Congress 5 year Service Award 1992-93, Public Relations Certificate of Achievement 1995-96, American Bowling Congress 10 year Service Award 1997-98.
