Arnie Ness
Barnesville
2001
Meritorious Service
Arnie and his wife have four children. He started his association with bowling when he was in ninth grade and set pins at Viking Lanes in Pelican Rapids.
After his discharge from the service, he joined his first league in Pelican Rapids. Since then, he has bowled in leagues in Pelican Rapids, Hawley, Fargo, and Barnesville. After the lanes closed in Barnesville, Arnie was approached to help organize leagues if a 'new' center were built. He agreed and bowling became a part of the recreation in Barnesville.
He has served on the local Board almost every year and currently serves on the Minnesota State Board of Directors.
Probably Arnie's greatest contribution to bowling has been his "Kids Program". He started it in 1979 when his own son, a fourth grader, wanted to learn to bowl. For the first few years, this program was held on Saturday with grade school kids bowling the first shift and high schoolers bowling the second shift. When the classes outgrew the lanes, he went to Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday after school for grade school and senior high on Saturdays. He has averaged 125 kids per week in the bowling program.
Arnie's high series is a 709, which was rolled in the Minnesota State Tournament in 1991 in the Singles Event. He has bowled in more than 15 state tournaments.
